Aim of Child-Help International
We aim at improving the quality of life of persons with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (our target group) and to prevent further disabilities, initially in a number of low and middle-income countries. In the longer term, we want to become a Knowledge Center on spina bifida and hydrocephalus for all these countries.
Overall, we use the following operational methods
- We are a network of organisations in different countries (now Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Tanzania) to which Child-Help International (CHI) is a facilitating, coordination mechanism. 5% of the turnover is used to provide these services.
- We invest in and support local partners providing a variety of services to our target groups, aiming at the evolving needs at different stages of life, whilst maximising effectiveness, efficiency, interdisciplinary collaboration, and learning at all levels;
- We develop operational standards and -tools, and models of interdisciplinary quality service delivery to these target groups that can inspire and be used around the world;
- Once these operational standards, -tools, and models of interdisciplinary service-delivery are available, we’ll facilitate the dissemination and implementation of these operational standards and models;
- We stimulate cooperation between all stakeholders in care in the country to achieve sustainable, affordable, and accessible care for the target group;
- Child-Help works in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and from a decolonial perspective.
We have taken the following overall strategic decisions
- We work through public, private as well as through local partners;
- CHI gives the target group, and it’s representative organization a key role in the development of the network in their country, in political action but also in the further development of CHI as an international organization;
- In some 'focus countries' Child-Help has a country representative and works through (capacity building of) local partners who provide services and with whom we will also develop our operational standards and models for interdisciplinary service delivery; We work with and for the target group on the development of accessible care and quality treatment.

- We develop tools and expertise to empower grassroots organizations to strengthen civil society.
- The member organisations are represented in all decision-making bodies of the legal entity Child-Help International, from the General Assembly to the operational meetings (“desks”).
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The communication and fundraising Coordinator
- Is part of the management team together with the coordinator Programs, the coordinator Finance and the President of CHI. Together they inspire, lead, coordinate, manage, communicate and reach out with the aim at improving the lives of persons with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus, and their families in regions where this is extremely challenging.
- She/he will develop a communication and fundraising plan for the organisation ensuring all stakeholders are handling in line and according to this plan.
- He/she will manage the communication of Child-Help International in cooperation with the Child-Help Members to ensure they are in line with the profile and image Child-Help wants to have globally.
- He/She will safeguard the name and brand of the organisation.
- He/she will guide and lead the communication and fundraising desk monthly
- He/she will facilitate and the process in obtaining local, national and international funding from local and global bodies, and lead CHI with co-funding files and build on a situation that can address donor quality information needs
- He/she will develop tools for communication and fundraising and mentor staff accordingly
- He/she coaches national staff towards funding to governments, foundations, corporate funding, other NGOs, etc…
- Cooperate with the coordinator Finance relevant co-funding requirements (e.g. EU, European Countries’ Cooperation Offices, USAID, UN Agencies, NGOs and other potential donors).
- Together with the management team on the basis of an initial situation analysis of existing services for persons with SB/HC, and of estimated needs, facilitate communication and fundraising initiatives towards the development of a multi-year Child-Help Strategy, Action Plan in a way that is as holistic, interdisciplinary and as sustainable as possible.
- Write application proposals for fundraising for the organization to the foundations, trusts, companies, corporate, NGOs, individuals, private and public institutions
- S/He is aware of opportunities, monitor fundraising applications processes and reporting to the management of the outcomes and status
- Coach partners on the reporting structure for each donor to fulfil donor requirements when funds are sourced from a specific donor.
- Work on the annual allocated target for fundraising for the organization to sustain and grow our income level.
- Liaise with our existing fundraising organizations (f.e DSC, Marketing…) to understand what is on the ground already and not double work/ to avoid overlapping from the appeal.
- Establish and manage donor portfolios for CHI and donor data management responsibilities. (keeping information, tracking processes regarding acknowledgement, recognition, ongoing communications and continued cultivation of past and current donors to enhance their relationship with CHI and increase likelihood of continued contributions).
- S/He manages communication and fundraising, contributes to and proofreads appeals, marketing materials and digital content for fundraising including newsletters, social media, picture database, annual reports etc as a communication tool to our donors, partners and friends.
- Ensure fundraising activities are kept with CHI values and guidelines and that the Children are at the center and protected in all communications, donor engagements and stewardship.
- Respect for human rights, privacy, code of fundraising practice is compliant with international fundraising regulations.
- Continue researching on identification of opportunities for CHI to fundraise and communicate, especially during emergency situations in the global context.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- A degree in a field that is relevant to fulfil the duties described in the job description
- Certificates that show social engagement and experience with project management are positive
- Or equal by experience relevant to the requirements of the job
EXPERIENCE
SPECIFIC FOR THE POSITION:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in communication and fundraising in an organization in the context of ‘social work’, preferably in one of the fields supported by Child-Help
- Also being a person with a disability, a parent or close family member of a person with a disability is considered a highly positive qualification
CAPACITY BUILDING SKILLS:
- Able to coach and motivate others in communication and fundraising skills
- Demonstrates the ability to coach and make staff and partners enthusiastic team player
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
REQUIRED:
- Fluent English in writing and speaking
- Knowledge of written and spoken French and/or Dutch is an asset.
- IT skills: Microsoft Tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint…), remote IT environment , Social media, Google Workspace

- Being keen and open to learn
- Ability to transfer knowledge to diverse audiences through training, mentoring, and other formal and non-formal methods

- Understanding and experience with personal computers, overall ICT, data management, including database design.

- Requires frequent use of personal computer, also whilst travelling, including word processing, database programs, online working environment
